Looking for a Bunny

I noticed one of the neighborhood cats running down the sidewalk with something wiggling around in her mouth.  I think the cat is a her anyway.  I’m not really sure because she is so fluffy that it is really hard to tell.  We found out her real name is Puss Puss, but before that we called her Big Red.  She is a long haired orange cat.  We love kitties but Big Red is challenged in the looks department.  Since I am from the south this is where I should say she is so ugly “bless her heart”.   She always runs to our house because I will sometimes give her a treat.  Aside from being “not so cute” she is also quite pushy.  When we first moved in I opened the door to go outside and she  ran inside the house.  I asked her if she was confused.  I told her that she didn’t live here.  A few of my cats were not so happy about the intrusion and encouraged her to go back outside.  I feel bad for her because her family doesn’t apparently take good care of her.  This is why I will sometimes give her a treat when I see her.  All of our kitties are strictly indoor kitties and they are extremely spoiled!

Back to Big Red/Puss Puss running down the street with something in her mouth.  As she was running I heard this awful squeaking coming from what ever was in her mouth.  I thought oh no she caught a bird.  I run down the street without shoes just my socks.  I get closer to Puss Puss and notice it is not a bird but something fuzzy.  I catch her and see what is in her mouth.  It was a tiny little baby bunny.  I open her mouth and release the bunny.  The baby bunny is so scared that he runs into the sidewalk and Puss Puss gets away from me and catches the bunny again.  I catch Puss Puss again and get the bunny out of her mouth.  The baby bunny was still alive, but also very scared.  The bunny was so tiny he fit in the palm of my hand and was so still from fear.  Before now I had never seen a bunny so tiny.  I take the baby bunny and decide to go to my house and wait until Puss Puss disappears.  I thought it would be best to release the bunny after I no longer saw Puss Puss.

After a few minutes I open the front door with the bunny and look around.  Suddenly from behind the bushes across the street I see Puss Puss jump out and start running towards me.  I forgot (even though I have four kitties) that kitties are extremely patient in hiding and waiting for their prey.  I go back inside and put the baby bunny in a shoe book.  I decided to wait awhile until Puss Puss was really gone and not just hiding behind a bush.  Even though kitties are patient they also have ADD.  They can get easily distracted sometimes when something more interesting comes along.

After some time passed I looked outside and saw a big adult bunny across the street making a weird noise.  I began to wonder if she was the mama bunny calling for her baby.  Until that day when I  heard the baby bunny crying from the cat’s mouth and the mama crying for her baby I had never heard a bunny make noises.  After hearing and seeing the mama bunny, I run and get the baby bunny.  I followed the mama bunny to some bushes and release the baby to her and together they both went further into the bush.  I was so glad they were reunited.  It would have made me so sad to see the mama bunny looking and calling for her baby when her baby was captured by a cat.  I love kitties, but I don’t like them catching cute little tiny baby bunnies.  Another good reason we keep our kitties indoors.  I don’t want to think about my kitties eating something so cute and little.

This whole ordeal happened sometime this summer.  Before this happened with the bunny I rarely saw bunnies around my house.  I have a garden in the summer and I would think that would be a bunny’s buffet.  More bunnies started to come around, but not one of them touched my garden.  I think the bunnies leave my garden alone because I rescued that baby bunny.  I have a deal with the bunnies.  However, I don’t know how long the deal will  last.  But, now every night we look outside there is a bunny in the backyard.  I wonder if they are watching over the house or saying thank you.  I don’t usually believe in unusual things.  But, I cannot help but wonder why the bunnies are suddenly here when they were never here before.  It also seems really coincidental that they are here now after I rescued that baby bunny.  Chrissy on the other hand is a little more realistic.  She thinks they come to eat the compost.
