Looking for Jillian Michaels
I have previously written about the fact that I have Hashimoto’s disease. Also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, which is a fun medical condition to say. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease that causes hypothyroidism. Basically my body attacked my thyroid and made it underactive. I usually keep myself educated on all things thyroid, but somehow something slipped by me. I knew about Oprah and her thyroid issues, but I just found out about Jillian Michaels. Jillian Michaels is a personal trainer. She is best known for motivating contestants on The Biggest Loser. Jillian Michaels having a thyroid disease is old news. But, I had no idea that she is a fellow thyroid struggler. I guess I should cut myself some slack. Knowing about celebs with thyroid issues it not as important as being educated about thyroid issues.
People who have hypothyroidism know that one of the biggest struggles is weight. Most people with this disease are overweight, because hypothyroidism causes us to have a slower metabolism. Most of us even struggle with our weight while on thyroid medication or while dieting and exercising. I never had weight issues before my thyroid disease. I am pretty convinced that if I did not have a thyroid condition that weight would not be such an issue for me. I know a lot of people (even those who do not have a thyroid disease) are not the weight they were when they were younger. I would definitely not weigh what I did in high school, but I do not think I would weigh what I do now either.
I am really inspired by Jillian Michaels. I was reading on her website that she struggled with her weight as a result of having a slower metabolism from thyroid disease. I would never have known by looking at her that she struggled with her weight because she looks great! It really gives me hope that I can be at my ideal weight. I know it would be hard to match her commitment to exercise and diet. I also know that it would be next to impossible to even look like her. But, than again I do not see a lot of people who do look like her. At least I know it is possible to look good and still have hypothyroidism. She even wrote a couple of books about metabolism. The books she wrote are, The Master Your Metabolism Cookbook, The Master Your Metabolism Calorie Counter and Master Your Metabolism. I have not read these books, but I am definitely interested in checking them out. Maybe I should challenge myself to get into awesome shape and be really fit than write blogs documenting everything. Maybe I am getting a little too inspired! Well, one can dream.
